Smithfield Hires Robert Thackston for Hog Farm Nuisance Trials
In 2013, Smithfield Foods’ North Carolina subsidiary was sued in hundreds of nuisance suits claiming damages for odors emanating from concentrated animal feeding operations. There have been three trials thus far resulting in substantial awards for the plaintiffs (which are subject to statutory caps and under appeal). Another seven trials are scheduled for Raleigh. Smithfield and their current counsel, McGuireWoods, chose Robert Thackston and his team from Hawkins Parnell Thackston & Young to take lead in the next trial in Raleigh. Thackston and his team are well-acquainted with plaintiffs’ counsel who have all made a fortune in asbestos and other toxic tort litigation.
“I am looking forward to returning to my home state to assist Smithfield and the farmers of North Carolina in trying to maintain their livelihood,” said Thackston. “These cases might be viewed as part of a larger effort by those who would tell others how to live to eliminate the raising of animals to feed our ever-growing population.”
